Documentation for Interrupt Button INIT
Interrupt Button is a simple, extremely handy INIT, which allows Macintosh users with a Programmers’ Switch, to hit the Interrupt Button and return to the desktop — without having that obnoxious dialog appear, and you have to type in “G FINDER” in order to return to the desktop. (A Programmers’ Switch, is that little panel with the two buttons on it and sometimes the switch is simply two little buttons pointing out of the Mac, without the panel. These buttons can appear on specific Macs either on the left side of your Mac [like the Classic, or Classic II] or on the left side of the front panel, near the bottom [like the IIci]. Unfortunately, on some Macs you have to have it installed either when you buy the machine, or after you have bought it — it doesn’t come free with the Mac [e.g.,. the IIci]. Two symbols appear on or above the buttons. One button has a symbol like the “PLAY” sign of a tape recorder. The other symbol looks just like the one on the Interrupt Button INIT icon [a little circle with a jagged line running through the middle]. You will need to push that one[!]).
Sometimes you have applications running, and you get a BOMB, one of those dialogs with a drawing of a bomb, saying something like “A system error occurred.” And then there is that little restart button in the corner that you get to click on. EVERYONE HATES THOSE!!! If you do get one of these, with Interrupt Button installed, hit the Interrupt Button on your Programmers’ Switch and you will return to the desktop. The application you were using when the BOMB occurred will, unfortunately, quit without saving any of your work. But for the ones still open, you can quickly go to them, save, and then quit. Once you have done this, IMMEDIATELY go back to the Finder and RESTART!
WARNING: DO NOT CONTINUE WITH YOUR WORK!!! Doing so may cause serious side effects. Things are still VERY unstable. This is why your Mac gets a BOMB in the first place — conditions become unstable and, PRESTO! Hopefully, after you restart, things will calm down.
Another time Interrupt Button comes in handy, is when your Mac freezes, except for the mouse. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you will be able to return to the desktop loosing the application that was open at the time of the freeze. The good part about recovering from a freeze is that you should be able to go back to work, without having to restart.
All you have to do is take the INIT, which is a system extension, and drop it into your System Folder. In System 7, it will ask you if you would like to put the item into the Extensions Folder — click “OK”. Restart your Mac, and it will install its self. If you would like to make sure it works, with NO applications open, hit the Interrupt button. The reason I say there should be no applications open is because, as I said before, it won’t save your documents when it quits!
If you would like to deinstall Interrupt Button, simply remove it from your System Folder (System 6) or your Extensions Folder (System 7). If you would like to remove it from your hard drive, do exactly what I said above (remove from system folder) except put it into the trash. You will not be able to erase Interrupt Button, until your next start-up because it loaded when you last started-up — it is “in use”.
